Dress up to get knocked down

Finally – last night lesson we got to do some sparring! We started class with the usual warm up then moved onto a game where we had to tap the head of anyone in the class while running around the gym protecting our own head. If you get tapped on the head you have to do ten push ups or ten squats before coming back into the game. Fun way to practise our 360 defence. We then practised our 360 defence in the air, then with a partner to add some finishing moves. After our block and strike we added a knee, a few punches and an escape and scan…a la robocop breep scanning for perps!

After this we put some gloves on and lined up on the bags to practise our boxing. Then we suited up (gloves, head gear, shin and groin guards) for some full contact sparring!

This was a first for me as the Wing Chun sparring I’m used to involves a gum shield and fingerless gloves which allows you to do more varied hand techniques as well as lock or trap your opponents arms. So I really learned a lot last night. I think I faired pretty well, blocking a lot of punches with the huge boxing gloves. Got to spar with one of the instructors who gave me a run for my money. Learned that heavy gloves and tired arms equals a slowly dropping guard. My arms were killing me the next day. Great work out and great fun sparring session.

  1. Wicked dude. I’m getting the urge to pad up and spar myself. I might have to for my upcoming secret project with Fighters Only!
